Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) Curriculum:
Intent:
Our PSHE curriculum is underpinned by safeguarding guidance for schools from the Keeping children safe in education; statutory guidance for schools and colleges (May 2016) which states that:
“Governing bodies and proprietors should ensure children are taught about safeguarding, including online through teaching and learning opportunities, as part of providing a broad and balanced curriculum. This may include covering relevant issues through personal, social health and economic education (PSHE) and through sex and relationship education (SRE).”

Here at Clerkenwell we know that children thrive on a well-rounded and balanced curriculum that prepares them for the world outside of school – Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is vital to this! Our curriculum provides children the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to manage their lives successfully now and into their future. Through engaging, hands on and talk-centered lessons children are equipped to stay healthy and safe throughout their lives, as well as to prepare for life and work in modern Britain. PSHE interweaves through all the children’s learning and is reinforced through cross-curricular links specifically planned by teachers.
Implementation:
PSHE is taught regularly using the You, Me PSHE scheme of work, which was developed in partnership with the Islington community of schools and with advice from health and education professions. The scheme of work meets all requirements as set out by the National Curriculum and safeguarding policies. The scheme is set out into 7 different strands as shown below. The strands covers all areas of health and wellbeing, financial health as well as sexual health and safeguarding surrounding this topic as well as drugs and alcohol misuse. All strands are vital for children to know to help keep themselves safe and make good choices throughout primary school, into further education and beyond. All staff are trained in safeguarding and are confident in addressing all topics with the sensitivity they deserve.
The seven strands covered throughout the PSHE scheme of work:
Within each strand each year group is allocated age-appropriate topics that helps build on knowledge throughout their time at primary school. Topics are block taught per half term, with SRE being taught over a whole term in Year 2, 4 and 6. Each class uses a PSHE reflection book in which the learning outcomes based on knowledge and understanding, skills and the development of attitudes are monitored and assessed.
