Support for parents

Parent support sessions on illness, attendance and supporting children at home

The Islington School Health Team will be running health promotion sessions lasting around 45 minutes over the next 4 weeks on Mondays and Thursdays via Zoom for parents/carers to attend.

 

We hope that these sessions will provide a safe space for parents/carers to have any questions answered and reassurance provided for any concerns/anxieties they may have considering the times and season we are in. Topics of these sessions can change over the weeks at parents/carers request e.g. focus on bedwetting, diet/nutrition or emotional wellbeing.

Please find attached information about FREE training delivered by Brandon Centre about supporting parents/carers to set healthy boundaries around food. The training looks at family's relationship with food and weight, barriers families face to set boundaries, how health messages influence parental feeding behaviours, gain confidence and skills in having conversations with families around weight, link between parenting styles and feeding behaviours and more. This training is particularly relevant to staff who may have conversation with parents around healthier lifestyle choices, encouraging parents to seek help such as attending Families for Life / Family Kitchen programme, or if you support the delivery of Family Kitchen programmes at your school. Free evening classes for Islington parents at Finsbury Library

 

Adult and Community Learning are offering free English (literacy), Maths and ICT Digital Skills evening classes for adults at Finsbury Library.

Classes are aimed at parents supporting their children or those that want to improve their skills for work.

Bereavement Support Services


Grief Encounter is one of the UK’s leading bereaved child charities, providing free, pioneering services and support to bereaved children, young people and their families. 

On average one child in every classroom will experience the death of a parent or sibling before they reach 16 years of age; 44,000 dependent children bereaved a year. Adolescent grief has a devastating impact that can last for life, with research showing links to mental health issues, social and behavioural problems and more.

Grief Encounter offers a flexible and accessible service, which aims to professionally care and respond to bereaved children, young people and their families via counselling, group activities, family fun days, residential camps and interactive online services.

Extra curricular sessions available to pupils and families

Families, Food and Feelings parenting support

 

Islington are currently offering a new eight-week programme for parents or carers of children who would benefit from support with weight management and/or healthy eating habits. Children need to be aged 5-17 and live, attend school or have a GP in Islington.

 

Course participants will be supported to:

  • Gain confidence in parenting skills
  • Learn about boundaries and managing their child’s behaviour
  • Help their child make wiser food choices
  • Understand their family’s relationship to food
  • Break the cycle of unhealthy eating
  •  

The course starts on Tuesday, 28 January 4.30-6pm at the Brandon Centre, 26 Prince of Wales Road, NW5 3LG or Wednesday, 29 January 9.30-11am at Gospel Oak Health Centre, 5 Lismore Circus, NW5 4RA.

Parents' Place Drop-in Coffee Morning, Cat and Mouse Library

A relaxed drop-in for all parents and carers to come and meet others and chat about all aspects of family life, organised by Early Help Parent Champions and Early Help Fathers Champions.

  • Join us for coffee and snacks!
  • Chat to other parents and learn from each other
  • Face to face support - Parent Champions are available to listen and offer knowledge about community support.
  • Get help and be signposted to services that can support you and your family
  • Guest speakers and varied activities
  •  

Parents Place will take place on every second Tuesday of the month from 10:30-12:30.
